Outcomes of a problem-solving approach to independence in children with multiple limb deficiencies

Occupational therapists can play a unique role in helping children with disabilities develop a positive history of mastery of skills and habits necessary for continued movement along the developmental continuum throughout the life cycle. An independent problem-solving approach to treatment is suggested as a method of facilitating development of skills and habits which will continue to support independence. A case history of a 27-year-old woman who as a child participated in a program using this approach illustrates how her use of independent problem-solving to master competent performance of adult roles.
