Background:

Optimizing student learning is a persistent challenge in education.
Understanding learning styles allows educators to tailor teaching methods for improved student outcomes.

Purpose of the Study:

To determine the learning styles of junior occupational therapy students.
To provide data for enhancing teaching strategies in occupational therapy programs.

Main Methods:

Kolb's Learning Style Inventory, a 12-item questionnaire, was administered.
Data collected from 201 junior occupational therapy students between 1990-1999.
Learning styles were identified using Kolb's established criteria.

Main Results:

Learning styles varied annually among student cohorts.
Convergers represented the largest group (mean = 35%), while divergers were least common (mean = 18%).
The majority of students identified as convergers (35%) and assimilators (25%).

Conclusions:

Findings highlight the prevalence of converger and assimilator learning styles in this occupational therapy cohort.
Educators can apply these insights to develop more effective, student-centered pedagogical approaches.
Tailoring instruction to identified learning styles can enhance the educational experience for occupational therapy students.
