Summary

This study explored spatial orientation ability in junior high boys. Paper-and-pencil tests showed significant correlations, but a physical performance test did not correlate with other spatial ability measures.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the interrelationships between established and newly developed spatial orientation ability tests.
  • To determine if paper-and-pencil tests and physical performance tests measure the same underlying spatial abilities.

Main Methods:

  • Administered four spatial ability tests to 202 junior high school boys (aged 11-15).
  • Included two subtests from the Guilford-Zimmerman Aptitude Survey and two novel tests.
  • One test involved physical performance (tumbling), while three were paper-and-pencil based.

Main Results:

  • Significant positive correlations were found among the three paper-and-pencil spatial tests (ranging from .44 to .62).
  • The physical performance (tumbling) test did not show a significant correlation with any of the paper-and-pencil tests.
  • This suggests potential differences in the constructs measured by different modalities of spatial ability assessment.

Conclusions:

  • Paper-and-pencil measures of spatial orientation ability appear to be internally consistent.
  • Physical performance tests of spatial ability may assess distinct constructs compared to traditional paper-and-pencil methods.
  • Further research is needed to validate physical performance tests as measures of spatial orientation ability.
