Background:

Managed care necessitates cost containment in healthcare facilities.
Critical pathways are a prevalent strategy for meeting these demands.
Understanding occupational therapist (OTR) engagement with critical pathways is crucial.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate the current involvement of OTRs in the utilization and creation of critical pathways.
To identify barriers and opportunities for OTRs within critical pathway frameworks.

Main Methods:

A national survey was conducted to gather data on OTR involvement.
Data analysis focused on current use, development roles, and awareness of future implementation.

Main Results:

70.5% of surveyed OTRs reported not currently using critical pathways.
A majority of OTRs are not actively involved in critical pathway development or aware of future plans.
Data on diagnoses and specific OT areas using critical pathways were collected from the minority of users.

Conclusions:

OTRs need greater engagement in the development and use of critical pathways.
Proactive involvement in these managed care-driven quality assurance methods is vital for OTRs.
Enhanced OTR participation can maintain and elevate their position within the allied health profession.
