Summary

This study investigated biochemical markers of oxidative stress and antioxidant defense in a chemotherapy-resistant breast cancer case. Results showed high oxidative stress but insufficient to cause tumor cell death.

Cancer Prevention

Several factors can increase the risk of cancer in an individual. About 50% of cancer cases can be prevented by adopting a healthy lifestyle, regular exercise, eating healthy, and following a modest cancer prevention diet. Epidemiological studies have consistently shown that populations with vegetable and fruit-rich diets have reduced the incidence of cancer. On the other hand, populations who have a diet rich in animal fat, red meat, junk food, or high calories are predisposed to cancer.

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Biochemistry
  • Cellular Biology

Background:

  • Breast cancer is a leading cause of death in women, with chemotherapy resistance being a major therapeutic challenge.
  • Evaluating genetic markers for chemotherapy resistance is clinically difficult.
  • This study explores easily measurable biochemical parameters correlated with chemotherapy resistance.

Observation:

  • A clinical case of chemotherapy-resistant breast cancer with poor prognostic factors was analyzed.
  • Biochemical parameters of oxidative stress (lipid peroxidation, ceruloplasmin, albumin thiols, total antioxidants) were measured.
  • Apoptosis and tumoral tissue characteristics were assessed using histopathology, immunohistochemistry, and flow cytometry.

Findings:

  • The patient exhibited a high level of oxidative stress.
  • A diminished capacity for endogenous antioxidant defense was observed.
  • Despite high oxidative stress, it was insufficient to induce significant tumor cell cytotoxicity.

Implications:

  • Biochemical markers of oxidative stress may offer insights into chemotherapy resistance.
  • Further research is needed to understand the complex interplay between oxidative stress and treatment response in breast cancer.
  • Identifying reliable biomarkers could improve therapeutic strategies for resistant breast cancer.
