- Developmental Psychology
- Clinical Pharmacy
Background:
- Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex neurodevelopmental condition affecting children.
- Early and accurate diagnosis is crucial for effective intervention.
Purpose of the Study:
- To outline the comprehensive diagnostic and treatment process for children with ASD.
- To highlight the role of a multidisciplinary team, including pharmacists, in managing ASD symptoms.
Main Methods:
- Comprehensive evaluation by a multidisciplinary team (psychologist, neurologist, psychiatrist, speech therapist).
- Development of individualized treatment plans involving educational, behavioral, and pharmacological interventions.
Main Results:
- Medications, in conjunction with behavioral and educational strategies, can significantly minimize or alleviate common ASD symptoms.
- Symptoms addressed include anxiety, depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, behavioral problems, seizures, impulsivity, and hyperactivity.
Conclusions:
- A collaborative, multidisciplinary approach is essential for managing autism spectrum disorder in children.
- Pharmacological interventions play a vital role in symptom management, improving quality of life for affected children.
Abstract:
Autism is a complex disorder that affects children. Children who present with symptoms of autism require a comprehensive evaluation by a multidisciplinary team including a psychologist, neurologist, psychiatrist, speech therapist, and other professionals who diagnose children with autism spectrum disorders. Following the diagnosis, a treatment plan is developed, which in most cases involve educational and behavioral interventions and medications. The multidisciplinary team then expands to a team of professionals to treat the disorder, the team of which includes a pharmacist. Anxiety, depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, behavioral problems, seizures, impulsivity, and hyperactivity are the main symptoms of autism that have in many cases been successfully minimized and in some cases alleviated by proper medication.
