Summary

Feline herpetic keratitis treatment is enhanced by ophthalmic cidofovir, an antiviral agent. This study shows cidofovir significantly reduced clinical signs of ocular infection in cats with feline herpesvirus type 1.

Background:

Feline herpetic keratitis is a common ocular infection in cats.
Current treatment involves antiviral, immunomodulatory, and antibacterial therapies.
Limited approved agents and drug availability necessitate alternative treatments.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate the efficacy of ophthalmic cidofovir for treating feline herpetic keratitis.
To assess the impact of cidofovir on clinical signs of ocular infection caused by feline herpesvirus type 1.

Main Methods:

An investigation was conducted at Colorado State University College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Science.
The study evaluated the effect of a new ophthalmic antiviral agent, cidofovir.
Application of cidofovir was assessed in cats with feline herpetic keratitis.

Main Results:

Ophthalmic cidofovir significantly decreased clinical signs of acute ocular infection.
The positive effects were observed in cats infected with feline herpesvirus type 1.
Cidofovir demonstrated efficacy as a treatment for feline herpetic keratitis.

Conclusions:

Ophthalmic cidofovir is a promising agent for treating feline herpetic keratitis.
Compounding pharmacists can collaborate with veterinary ophthalmologists to develop specialized treatment options.
Patient-specific dosages and formulations can improve therapeutic response in cats.
