Area of Science:

  • Veterinary Ophthalmology
  • Feline Infectious Diseases

Background:

  • Feline herpetic keratitis is a common ocular infection in cats.
  • Current treatment involves antiviral, immunomodulatory, and antibacterial therapies.
  • Limited approved agents and drug availability necessitate alternative treatments.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of ophthalmic cidofovir for treating feline herpetic keratitis.
  • To assess the impact of cidofovir on clinical signs of ocular infection caused by feline herpesvirus type 1.

Main Methods:

  • An investigation was conducted at Colorado State University College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Science.
  • The study evaluated the effect of a new ophthalmic antiviral agent, cidofovir.
  • Application of cidofovir was assessed in cats with feline herpetic keratitis.

Main Results:

  • Ophthalmic cidofovir significantly decreased clinical signs of acute ocular infection.
  • The positive effects were observed in cats infected with feline herpesvirus type 1.
  • Cidofovir demonstrated efficacy as a treatment for feline herpetic keratitis.

Conclusions:

  • Ophthalmic cidofovir is a promising agent for treating feline herpetic keratitis.
  • Compounding pharmacists can collaborate with veterinary ophthalmologists to develop specialized treatment options.
  • Patient-specific dosages and formulations can improve therapeutic response in cats.
