Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of a swallow preservation protocol (SPP) in maintaining swallowing function.
  • To assess the impact of adherence to the SPP on swallowing-related outcomes in head and neck cancer patients.

Main Methods:

  • A case series with chart review was conducted at a tertiary care academic medical center.
  • Eighty-five patients undergoing RT or CRT participated in the SPP, divided into compliant and noncompliant groups.
  • Swallowing function was assessed by diet consistency and gastrostomy tube dependence at 1 month post-therapy.

  • Patient compliance with swallow exercises is associated with better swallowing outcomes, including reduced need for gastrostomy tubes and fewer diet restrictions.
