Continuing hepatitis B virus (HBV) replication in carriers with chronic persistent hepatitis predicts disease worsening. Stopping HBV replication correlates with improved liver health and remission.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between HBV replication and histologic changes in chronic persistent hepatitis.
  • To determine if HBV DNA persistence predicts disease progression.
  • To evaluate the impact of HBV replication cessation on liver disease outcomes.

Main Methods:

  • Serial liver biopsies were analyzed in 44 chronic persistent hepatitis B patients.
  • HBV DNA and serologic markers (HBeAg/anti-HBe) were monitored.
