Summary

ERG expression in prostate cancer (PCA) is linked to higher pathological stage and extra-prostatic extension. However, ERG protein levels show limited prognostic value for localized PCA clinical outcomes.

Main Results:

ERG expression detected in 43.4% of cases, exclusively in neoplastic epithelium.
ERG expression significantly associated with extra-prostatic extension and higher pathological stage (pT3 vs pT2).
Association with higher pathological stage was more pronounced in patients with Gleason score > 7.

Conclusions:

ERG protein levels are significantly associated with adverse pathological features like extra-prostatic extension and advanced stage.
ERG expression does not correlate with adverse clinical outcomes in localized PCA.
ERG has limited prognostic value for localized prostate cancer.
