Summary

ERG expression in prostate cancer (PCA) is linked to higher pathological stage and extra-prostatic extension. However, ERG protein levels show limited prognostic value for localized PCA clinical outcomes.

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Urology
  • Molecular Pathology

Background:

  • Prognostic significance of ERG expression in prostate cancer (PCA) remains debated.
  • Investigating ERG's role in localized PCA is crucial for understanding disease progression.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the prognostic significance of ERG protein expression in localized prostate cancer.
  • To correlate ERG expression with pathological parameters and clinical outcomes.

Main Methods:

  • Analyzed ERG protein expression in 198 localized PCA patients.
  • Correlated ERG levels with Gleason score, pathological stage, surgical margins, and extra-capsular extension.
  • Assessed association with clinical outcomes and post-surgical PSA levels.

Main Results:

  • ERG expression detected in 43.4% of cases, exclusively in neoplastic epithelium.
  • ERG expression significantly associated with extra-prostatic extension and higher pathological stage (pT3 vs pT2).
  • Association with higher pathological stage was more pronounced in patients with Gleason score > 7.

Conclusions:

  • ERG protein levels are significantly associated with adverse pathological features like extra-prostatic extension and advanced stage.
  • ERG expression does not correlate with adverse clinical outcomes in localized PCA.
  • ERG has limited prognostic value for localized prostate cancer.
