Lipomatous hamartoma of cardiac valves is a rare condition. This case report details a 9-year-old girl diagnosed with a mitral valve mass, confirmed as lipomatous hamartoma.
Area of Science:
- Cardiovascular Pathology
- Pediatric Cardiology
- Surgical Oncology
Background:
- Lipomatous hamartoma of cardiac valves is an exceptionally rare benign tumor.
- Previous literature reports only three pediatric cases of cardiac valve lipomatous hamartoma.
- This condition presents a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge in pediatric patients.
Observation:
- A 9-year-old girl presented with an incidental finding of a mitral valve mass during an echocardiogram for a heart murmur.
- The mass was visualized as a distinct, round-shaped lesion attached to the mitral valve.
- Preoperative imaging suggested a cardiac tumor requiring surgical intervention.
Findings:
- Surgical excision of the mitral valve mass was successfully performed.
- Histopathological examination confirmed the diagnosis of lipomatous hamartoma.
- The tumor was characterized by mature adipose tissue, consistent with a hamartomatous proliferation.
Implications:
- This case expands the limited pediatric experience with cardiac valve lipomatous hamartoma.
- Early diagnosis and surgical management are crucial for favorable outcomes in pediatric cardiac tumors.
- Further research into the etiology and optimal management of these rare cardiac lesions is warranted.
