Background:

  • Data on dermatologic diseases in elderly individuals from Nepal is lacking.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the characteristic patterns and frequency of dermatoses in geriatric patients (60 years and above) in Nepal.
  • To provide baseline data for future geriatric dermatologic research in the region.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional study was conducted on patients aged 60 years and above visiting an outpatient department in Nepal.
  • Data collected included age, sex, place of residence, and dermatologic diagnosis.
  • A total of 330 geriatric patients were analyzed from April 2010 to April 2011.

Main Results:

  • Geriatric patients constituted 5.1% of all outpatient visits.
  • The most common dermatoses were eczema (35.8%), fungal infections (13.6%), and viral infections (7%).
  • Photodermatitis showed statistical significance, and eczema was more prevalent in females, while viral and fungal infections were more common in males.

Conclusions:

  • Eczema and infections are the most prevalent dermatoses among the elderly in Nepal.
  • This study highlights the need for further epidemiologic research, including treatment and follow-up, to address the burden of geriatric dermatologic diseases.
  • Findings can inform public health strategies to reduce morbidity and psychological distress in elderly patients with skin conditions.
