We developed new methods to measure reciprocity in weighted networks, revealing insights into network dynamics and structure. Our approach accurately quantifies reciprocal links, unlike previous uninformative measures.
Area of Science:
- Network Science
- Complex Systems
- Data Analysis
Background:
- Reciprocal links significantly impact directed networks' dynamics, growth, and structure.
- Understanding reciprocity in weighted networks lags behind binary network analysis.
Purpose of the Study:
- To introduce a general approach for quantifying reciprocity in weighted networks.
- To define new metrics and null models for analyzing weighted network reciprocity.
- To address the gap in understanding dyadic properties of weighted networks.
Main Methods:
- Developed novel quantities and null models for weighted network reciprocity.
- Applied measures to classify networks and track reciprocity evolution.
- Distinguished true reciprocation from flux imbalances.
Main Results:
- Previous measures based on mutual weight similarity were found to be uninformative.
- New measures consistently classify weighted networks by reciprocity.
- Identified patterns at dyadic and vertex levels, differentiating reciprocation from asymmetry.
Conclusions:
- The proposed framework provides a robust method for analyzing weighted network reciprocity.
- This work advances the understanding of weighted network properties and their impact.
- Enables accurate classification and temporal analysis of network reciprocity.
