Electronic discharge summaries from an Australian stroke unit rarely include driving advice for patients. This poor documentation impacts public health and medico-legal considerations for older drivers.
Area of Science:
- Neurology
- Public Health
- Gerontology
Background:
- Driving is a complex activity requiring cognitive and physical abilities.
- Older drivers may be unaware of legal obligations regarding medical conditions affecting driving safety.
Purpose of the Study:
- To assess the quality of driving advice in electronic discharge summaries from an Australian stroke unit.
- To identify gaps in communicating driving recommendations to patients post-stroke.
Main Methods:
- A retrospective review of one month of electronic discharge summaries from an Australian stroke unit.
- Assessment of summaries using a checklist including driving advice, diagnosis, and patient demographics.
Main Results:
- 41 patient summaries were reviewed; the average age was 72.
- Only 8 out of 41 discharge summaries (19.5%) contained any driving advice.
- Common diagnoses included stroke, transient ischaemic attack, and seizure.
Conclusions:
- Documentation of driving advice in electronic discharge summaries is inadequate.
- Poor communication of driving advice has significant public health, ethical, and medico-legal implications.
- Further research is needed to improve driving advice communication for stroke survivors.

Electric Field of a Charged Disk
The system's symmetry is in the cylindrical directions across the plane of the charge. As a result, the electric fields created by various surface charge elements nullify each other in the direction parallel to the surface. Thereby, the resulting electric field is perpendicular to the plane. Since the disk is...
