- Atmospheric oxygen levels were thought to be persistently low for the first 2 billion years of Earth's history.
- The Great Oxidation Event around 2.3 billion years ago marked the first long-term atmospheric oxygenation.
- Previous geochemical evidence suggested transient oxygenation events dating back to 2.6-2.7 billion years ago.
Observation:
- Analysis of chromium isotopes and redox-sensitive metals in the ~3-billion-year-old Nsuze paleosol and Ijzermyn iron formation.
- Extensive mobilization of redox-sensitive elements indicates oxidative weathering processes.
- Detailed examination of geochemical signatures in ancient South African rock formations.
Findings:
- Evidence of significant oxidative weathering in ~3-billion-year-old geological samples.
- Computed minimum atmospheric oxygen concentrations of 3 × 10⁻⁴ times present levels.
- Appreciable atmospheric oxygen existed ~3 billion years ago, predating the Great Oxidation Event by over 600 million years.
Implications:
- Challenges the long-held assumption of a strictly anoxic early atmosphere.
- Suggests earlier and potentially more complex atmospheric evolution than previously understood.
- Provides new constraints on the timing of early Earth's surface oxygenation and biological evolution.
