Prolonged catheterization (PC), lasting over 48 hours, significantly increases the risk of artificial urinary sphincter (AUS) cuff erosion. This finding highlights PC as an independent risk factor requiring careful management in AUS patients.

Background:

  • Artificial urinary sphincter (AUS) implantation is a treatment for male incontinence.
  • Cuff erosion is a known complication of AUS.
  • Risk factors for AUS complications require further elucidation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the association between prolonged catheterization (PC) and artificial urinary sphincter (AUS) cuff erosion.
  • To evaluate PC as an independent risk factor for AUS cuff erosion.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of 200 patients who underwent AUS implantation or revision between 2000 and 2010.
  • Analysis of patient records for urethral erosion, catheterization duration, and comorbidities.
  • Multivariate analysis to identify independent risk factors for erosion.

Main Results:

  • AUS cuff erosion occurred in 12% of patients.
  • Prolonged catheterization (PC >48 hours) was identified in 22% of patients.
  • Patients with PC had a significantly higher rate of erosion (39% vs. 10%, P <.001).
