Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy: Atomization Methods01:25

Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy: Atomization Methods

Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (AAS) atomizes samples through flame atomization or electrothermal atomization. Flame atomization typically involves a nebulizer and spray chamber assembly to combine the sample with a fuel–oxidant mixture, creating a fine aerosol mist that enters a burner. Typically, the fuel and oxidant are combined in an approximately stoichiometric ratio. However, for atoms that are easily oxidized, a fuel-rich mixture may be more advantageous. Only about 5% of the aerosol...

Area of Science:

  • Environmental Science
  • Analytical Chemistry
  • Biomonitoring

Background:

  • Atmospheric deposition of elements, including toxic metals, poses environmental and health risks.
  • Moss biomonitoring offers a cost-effective method for assessing air quality and pollutant distribution.
  • Albania lacked comprehensive data on multi-element atmospheric deposition prior to this study.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess multi-element atmospheric deposition in Albania using moss biomonitoring.
  • To identify the sources (natural vs. anthropogenic) of atmospheric elements.
  • To provide data for environmental and health risk assessment related to toxic metals.

Main Methods:

  • Collection of Hypnum cupressiforme moss samples from 62 sites across Albania.
  • Analysis of 19 elements, including toxic metals (Pb, Cd, As, Cu), using Inductively Coupled Plasma-Atomic Emission Spectrometry (ICP-AES).
  • Application of cluster analysis, factor analysis with varimax rotation, and GIS technology for data interpretation and mapping.

Main Results:

  • Median concentrations of Al, Cr, Ni, Fe, and V were high, while Cd, Cu, and Zn were low compared to European averages.
  • Element levels were comparable to neighboring Balkan countries.
  • Geographical distribution maps highlighted spatial patterns of element deposition.

Conclusions:

  • Moss biomonitoring is effective for assessing air quality and atmospheric deposition in Albania.
  • The study identified elements of potential concern and their distribution patterns.
  • Findings contribute to understanding environmental and health risks associated with toxic metals in Albania.
