    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the role of eosinophil major basic protein (MBP) in activating human basophils.
    • To determine the extent of histamine release from basophils upon MBP stimulation.

    Main Methods:

    • Incubation of leukocytes from 22 healthy donors with a suboptimal concentration of MBP.
    • Quantification of histamine release from stimulated basophils.

    Main Results:

    • Histamine release of >= 15% was observed in cells from 20 out of 22 donors.
    • Significant inter-individual variability in donor responsiveness to MBP was noted upon repeated testing.
