Background:

Diffuse drusen represent an atypical form of macular degeneration.
Understanding the underlying pathology of diffuse drusen is crucial for managing associated complications.

Observation:

Microscopic examination of an affected eye revealed significant thickening of the inner Bruch's membrane.
This thickening was characterized by vesicular and curvilinear membranous profiles and basement membrane-like material.

Findings:

The abnormal material appears to originate from the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE).
This suggests a diffuse RPE abnormality contributing to the observed changes.

Implications:

The pathological findings predispose to serious conditions like choroidal neovascularization and retinal pigment epithelium detachment.
