Single-balloon enteroscopy (SBE) is a safe and effective tool for diagnosing small-bowel disorders, including obscure gastrointestinal bleeding. This study shows SBE has a good diagnostic yield and allows for therapeutic interventions with minimal complications.
Area of Science:
- Gastroenterology
- Endoscopy
- Small Bowel Imaging
Background:
- Small bowel disorders present diagnostic challenges.
- Enteroscopy offers a method for direct visualization and intervention.
- Single-balloon enteroscopy (SBE) is an advanced endoscopic technique.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the single-center experience with single-balloon enteroscopy (SBE).
- To assess the safety and efficacy of SBE in diagnosing small bowel diseases.
- To determine the diagnostic yield and therapeutic potential of SBE.
Main Methods:
- Retrospective analysis of 40 patients undergoing 48 SBE procedures from February 2011 to February 2013.
- Procedures included antegrade (68.8%) and retrograde (31.2%) approaches.
- Indications included obscure gastrointestinal bleeding, chronic diarrhea, and abdominal pain.
Main Results:
- The diagnostic yield of SBE was 55%.
- Therapeutic interventions were performed in 20% of patients.
- No significant complications were reported during the study period.
Conclusions:
- Single-balloon enteroscopy is a safe and effective diagnostic tool for small bowel diseases.
- SBE facilitates therapeutic interventions in patients with small bowel pathology.
- SBE represents a valuable addition to the endoscopic armamentarium for small bowel evaluation.
