Summary

This study shows that an internet-based intervention effectively increased walking in sedentary adults over 50. Monetary rewards further boosted step counts, demonstrating a viable strategy for promoting physical activity.

  • To assess the impact of monetary consequences on adherence to step goals.

  • 12 sedentary adults over 50 participated in two experiments.
  • Experiment 1: Participants received monetary rewards for meeting increasing step goals.
  • Experiment 2: Step goals were set without monetary consequences.

Main Results:

  • Walking increased by 182% in Experiment 1 and 108% in Experiment 2.
  • 87% of step goals were met with monetary consequences; 52% were met without.
  • 11 out of 12 participants increased their steps.

Conclusions:

  • An Internet-based intervention is effective for increasing walking in sedentary older adults.
  • Monetary consequences enhance adherence to step goals.
  • This approach shows promise for promoting physical activity and improving health outcomes.
