Obesity

1.6K
The Body Mass Index (BMI) is a numerical value derived from a person's weight and height, used to categorize individuals into weight ranges. It is calculated using the formula: weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared. Obesity is a health condition characterized by excessive accumulation of adipose tissue that poses health risks, often diagnosed with a BMI ≥ 30. This excess fat storage occurs when surplus dietary calories are converted into triglycerides and stored in...

Models of Health Promotion and Illness Prevention I

2.8K
A model is a theoretical way to understand a concept or an idea. Models can overcome barriers to health regardless of diverse economic and cultural backgrounds. In addition, models make the task easier by providing different ways to approach complex issues. There are two major health promotion models: the health belief model and the health promotion model.
The health belief model (HBM) attempts to predict health-related behavior in specific belief patterns. According to the HBM, a person's...

Models of Health Promotion and Illness Prevention II

2.1K
The person's health status fluctuates continually, varying from being in good health to becoming ill and returning to being healthy. To understand the concept of illness prevention, there are two models. First, the health-illness continuum model is a graphic representation of an individual's wellness. It states that a person is considered healthy in the absence of physical disease and the presence of good emotional health.
The agent-host-environment model states that disease results...

Drug Dosing: Obese Patients

374
In the United States, obesity is a prominent concern. It is linked to heightened mortality rates due to increased occurrences of conditions such as hypertension, atherosclerosis, coronary artery disease, and diabetes compared to nonobese individuals. A patient is classified as obese if their actual body weight surpasses the ideal or desirable body weight by 20%, based on Metropolitan Life Insurance Company data. Ideal body weights consider average weights and heights for males and females...

Stress Prevention and Stress Management Techniques VI

Adopting a healthier lifestyle often requires overcoming significant challenges, but leveraging psychological, social, and cultural resources can facilitate meaningful change. Effective self-change hinges on understanding and applying key tools such as motivation and goal setting, which help sustain efforts toward long-term health benefits.
Motivation and Self-Determination
Motivation, the driving force behind behavior, plays a pivotal role at every stage of the change process. The research...

Area of Science:

  • Medical Education
  • Public Health
  • Obesity Research

Background:

  • Physicians are urged to be role models in combating the obesity epidemic.
  • Limited data exists on undergraduate medical education obesity curricula.
  • Physician attitudes and knowledge influence patient counseling on weight management.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the impact of a personal weight management experience on third-year medical students.
  • To evaluate the development of empathy and understanding of patient struggles with obesity.

Main Methods:

  • An optional, 4-week personal weight management intervention was integrated into a family medicine clerkship.
  • Students calculated body mass index (BMI), waist circumference, and caloric needs.
  • Participants documented eating, physical activity, and monitoring plans, submitting a final report and reflection.

Main Results:

  • 72% of students participated in the extra credit weight management activity.
  • Most participating students lost or maintained their weight.
  • Students reported increased gratitude and empathy for patients managing weight.

Conclusions:

  • A personal weight management experience can enhance medical students' understanding of patient challenges.
  • Students gain insights into their own health while developing empathy.
  • The intervention is feasible with minimal faculty involvement.
