    Summary

Polymorphic eruption of pregnancy involves skin edema, inflammation, and epidermal lesions. Histopathology aids diagnosis, and direct immunofluorescence helps differentiate it from herpes gestationis.

    Area of Science:

    • Dermatopathology
    • Obstetric Dermatology

    Background:

    • Polymorphic eruption of pregnancy (PEP) is a common dermatosis of pregnancy.
    • Accurate diagnosis is crucial for appropriate management and patient reassurance.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To report microscopic findings in PEP biopsies.
    • To correlate histopathological features with clinical presentation.
    • To evaluate the utility of direct immunofluorescence in differentiating PEP.

    Main Methods:

    • Analysis of 31 skin biopsies from patients with PEP.
    • Literature review of existing studies on PEP.
    • Direct immunofluorescence on 10 selected cases.

    Main Results:

    • Consistent findings include dermal edema, lympho-histiocytic infiltrate, and epidermal changes.
    • A correlation was observed between inflammatory response intensity and epidermal involvement.
    • Direct immunofluorescence was negative for immunoglobulin and complement deposits in all tested cases.

    Conclusions:

    • Histopathological examination, combined with clinical data, enables accurate diagnosis of PEP.
    • Direct immunofluorescence can help exclude nonbullous herpes gestationis.
