Area of Science:

  • Obstetrics and Gynecology
  • Public Health
  • Sociology

Background:

  • Domestic violence (DV) is a significant public health issue affecting women globally.
  • Understanding the prevalence and associated factors of DV during pregnancy is crucial for targeted interventions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the prevalence of domestic violence among pregnant women in Sanliurfa.
  • To identify clinical and sociodemographic factors associated with domestic violence exposure during pregnancy.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional study involving 317 pregnant women at Sanliurfa Obstetrics Hospital and Harran University.
  • Utilized a modified Abuse Assessment Screen questionnaire to collect data on DV exposure.
  • Gathered clinical and sociodemographic information, including family history of DV and body mass index.

Main Results:

  • 47.3% of women experienced DV before pregnancy, decreasing to 10.3% during pregnancy (p < .001).
  • A positive family history of DV (mother's exposure) was significantly associated with higher DV rates (p < .001).
  • DV-exposed pregnant women had lower mean body mass index (p = .011), fewer parental visits (p = .002), and reduced social interactions.

Conclusions:

  • Pregnancy appears to be associated with a decrease in domestic violence exposure in the studied population.
  • Family history of DV and lower BMI are significant risk factors for DV among pregnant women.
  • Interventions should consider social support and family dynamics in addressing DV during pregnancy.
