Area of Science:

  • Urology
  • Surgical Education
  • Minimally Invasive Surgery

Context:

  • Laparoscopic pyeloplasty is a complex procedure requiring specialized skills.
  • Training novice surgeons in laparoscopy presents significant challenges.
  • A need exists for accessible and effective simulation models.

Purpose:

  • To present a novel, cost-effective training model for laparoscopic dismembered pyeloplasty.
  • To evaluate the efficacy of this model in improving surgical performance for residents with no prior laparoscopic experience.

Summary:

  • A training model simulating ureteropelvic junction obstruction was developed using pig kidneys and chicken crops.
  • Eight residents with basic surgical training but no laparoscopic experience underwent 10 training sessions.
  • Both operating time and anastomosis error scores significantly decreased, demonstrating improved proficiency.

Impact:

  • This training model provides an effective platform for surgical skill acquisition in laparoscopic pyeloplasty.
  • It is particularly suitable for training surgeons lacking prior laparoscopic experience, enhancing patient safety.
  • The model's simplicity and accessibility can broaden the reach of laparoscopic surgical training.
