Diseases of the Liver and Gallbladder

2.1K
Liver and gallbladder diseases are a significant health concern, with prominent conditions including cirrhosis, hepatitis, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), and gallstones. Jaundice is a common manifestation of liver and biliary disease.
Cirrhosis is characterized by the scarring of hepatic lobules in the liver, which are replaced by fibrous tissue, affecting the liver's normal functioning. NAFLD, on the other hand, is caused by an excessive build-up of fat in the liver, not...

Area of Science:

  • Hepatology
  • Surgical Pathology
  • Developmental Biology

Background:

  • Ectopic liver, a rare congenital anomaly, involves liver tissue found outside its normal anatomical location.
  • While uncommon, ectopic liver tissue can undergo pathological changes, including malignancy.

Observation:

  • Case 1: A 31-year-old male presented with an incidental finding of ectopic liver tissue in the ligamentum teres during appendectomy.
  • Case 2: A 59-year-old male was diagnosed with ectopic liver tissue on the spleen, suspected to be hepatocellular carcinoma.

Findings:

  • Histopathology confirmed ectopic liver in both cases; the first required only surgical excision, while the second, confirmed hepatocellular carcinoma, was treated with splenectomy and adjuvant sorafenib.
  • Both patients had uncomplicated surgical outcomes and recoveries.

Implications:

  • Awareness of ectopic liver is crucial for accurate diagnosis and management of potential complications, including malignancy.
  • Surgical resection is indicated for ectopic liver due to the risk of malignant transformation.
  • Hepatocellular carcinoma arising in ectopic liver follows standard treatment protocols.
