A young Chihuahua dog was diagnosed with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), a type of liver cancer. This case represents the youngest dog on record to be diagnosed with this condition.
Area of Science:
- Veterinary Medicine
- Canine Oncology
- Hepatology
Background:
- Elevated serum liver enzymes in dogs can indicate underlying hepatic disease.
- Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a primary liver tumor in dogs, typically diagnosed in older animals.
- Early detection and diagnosis are crucial for effective treatment of canine liver disease.
Purpose of the Study:
- To report a rare case of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in a very young dog.
- To highlight the importance of diagnostic imaging and histopathology in identifying liver masses.
- To contribute to the understanding of the age distribution of HCC in canines.
Main Methods:
- Diagnostic evaluation of a 25-month-old Chihuahua with incidental high serum liver enzymes.
- Abdominal ultrasonography and computed tomography (CT) to characterize the liver mass.
- Surgical resection of the hepatic mass.
- Histopathological examination of the resected tissue for definitive diagnosis.
Main Results:
- Imaging revealed a mass in the left hepatic medial lobe.
- Histopathology confirmed the diagnosis of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).
- The dog was asymptomatic at the time of diagnosis.
Conclusions:
- Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) can occur in very young dogs, challenging typical age-related assumptions.
- Diagnostic imaging and histopathology are essential for diagnosing liver masses in dogs, regardless of age.
- This case represents the youngest documented instance of HCC in a dog, expanding the known spectrum of this disease.
