Summary

Determining orbital volume is challenging. While glass beads and casts offer reproducible results in cadavers, CT scans with standardized anterior limit estimation are recommended for broader human orbital volume studies.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare three common methods for determining orbital volume.
  • To identify an accurate and practical method for orbital volume measurement.

Main Methods:

  • Three methods were used on 8 human cadaver orbits: CT with 3D volumetric software, silicone casts measured by water displacement, and filling with glass beads measured by graduated cylinder.
  • Statistical analysis was performed on the collected data.

Main Results:

  • Good intraobserver agreement was found for the bead and cast methods.
  • Good interobserver agreement was observed for the bead and CT methods.
  • Direct measurement methods (beads, casts) showed good agreement with each other but not with indirect CT measurements.

  • Orbital volume determination is inherently difficult due to the orbit's complex shape, requiring estimation regardless of method.
  • Glass beads and casts provide reproducible results but are limited to cadaveric use.
  • CT volumetric software, with standardized anterior orbital limit estimation, is proposed as the most suitable method for studying human orbital volumes, despite potential methodological errors.
