Skin Cancer

5.2K
Skin cancer is a type of cancer that occurs when there is an abnormal growth of skin cells, usually triggered by damage to the DNA within the skin cells. It is primarily caused by exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun or artificial sources like tanning beds. Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer worldwide, and its incidence continues to rise.
Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC): BCC is the most common type of skin cancer, accounting for about 80% of cases. It typically develops in...

Summary

A rare case of deep-infiltrating basal cell carcinoma on the back, without prior skin cancer history or trauma, was successfully treated with wide surgical excision. This highlights the importance of recognizing unusual presentations of basal cell carcinoma.

Area of Science:

  • Dermatology
  • Surgical Oncology

Background:

  • Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common type of skin cancer, typically arising in sun-exposed areas.
  • Subcutaneous presentations of BCC are rare, often lacking typical cutaneous features.

Observation:

  • A patient presented with a subcutaneous soft tissue lesion on the back.
  • No history of prior skin malignancy or local trauma was reported.
  • Initial excision revealed basal cell carcinoma with deep infiltration.

Findings:

  • Complete tumor removal was achieved through wide re-excision with generous margins.
  • The patient remained recurrence-free for 18 months post-surgery.
  • Histopathological confirmation of deep-infiltrating basal cell carcinoma was essential.

Implications:

  • This case emphasizes the importance of considering BCC in unusual subcutaneous locations.
  • Early and complete surgical excision is crucial for managing deep-infiltrating BCC.
  • Awareness of rare BCC presentations can improve diagnostic accuracy and patient outcomes.
