Routine amniotic fluid alphafetoprotein assay: experience with 40,000 pregnancies

Summary

Elevated alphafetoprotein (AFP) levels in amniotic fluid, especially when combined with positive acetylcholinesterase (AChE), significantly increase the risk of open neural tube defects (NTDs). All NTDs were detected, with a low false-positive rate in this screening study.
