Language Development01:22

Language Development

1.1K
Children master language quickly and with relative ease, supported by both biological predisposition and reinforcement. B. F. Skinner (1957) proposed that language is learned through reinforcement, while Noam Chomsky (1965) argued that language acquisition mechanisms are biologically determined.
The critical period for language acquisition suggests that the ability to acquire language is at its peak early in life. As people age, this proficiency decreases. Language development begins very...

Learning Disabilities01:25

Learning Disabilities

711
Learning disabilities are cognitive disorders caused by neurological impairments that affect cognitive functions like language and reading, without indicating overall intellectual or developmental challenges. These disabilities differ from global intellectual or developmental disabilities as they are limited to distinct cognitive functions. Common learning disabilities include dysgraphia, dyslexia, and dyscalculia, each of which impacts unique aspects of learning.

Language and Cognition

892
Language serves as a bridge between ideas and communication, influencing how individuals perceive and interact with the world. Psychologists have long debated whether language shapes thought or vice versa. This discussion gained grip with Edward Sapir and Benjamin Lee Whorf in the 1940s, who proposed that language determines thought, a concept known as linguistic determinism. They suggested that the vocabulary and structure of a language influence how its speakers think and perceive reality.

Purposive Learning

693
E. C. Tolman emphasized the purposiveness of behavior — the idea that much of our behavior is goal-directed. For instance, employees who aim for a promotion work diligently to meet their targets. Tolman argued that when classical conditioning and operant conditioning occur, the organism acquires certain expectations. In classical conditioning, a child might fear a dog because they expect it to bite. In operant conditioning, a person might consistently work overtime because they expect a...

Summary

This study shows that learning potential assessment can improve cognitive skills in preschool children with specific language impairment. Mediation techniques were effective in enhancing cognitive abilities for both typically developing children and those with language impairments.

Area of Science:

  • Child Psychology
  • Developmental Psychology
  • Speech-Language Pathology

Background:

  • Specific language impairment (SLI) affects preschool children's development.
  • Learning potential assessment aims to identify and enhance cognitive abilities.
  • Mediation is a key intervention strategy in developmental support.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the impact of learning potential methodology on the cognitive profile of children with SLI.
  • To evaluate the effectiveness of mediation in improving cognitive skills in children with and without SLI.
  • To compare cognitive profiles between typically developing children and those with SLI.

Main Methods:

  • Administered a learning potential assessment to 64 preschool children (32 typical, 32 SLI).
  • Applied mediation techniques as part of the learning potential methodology.
  • Compared pretest and posttest scores to measure changes in cognitive profiles.

Main Results:

  • Significant cognitive differences were observed between groups at pretest.
  • Both groups showed improvements from pretest to posttest after mediation.
  • Children with SLI showed significant gains in most cognitive areas, except classification and auditory memory.
  • Typically developing children improved across most subscales, excluding visual memory.

Conclusions:

  • Learning potential methodology and mediation show promise in enhancing cognitive skills for children with SLI.
  • Intervention strategies can positively impact cognitive development in preschool-aged children.
  • Further research can explore specific mediation techniques for targeted cognitive improvements.
