    Summary

    Robotic thymectomy offers a safe and feasible approach for early-stage thymomas, with potential for selected advanced cases. This study highlights 100% overall survival and low recurrence rates in robotic thymoma surgery.

    Background:

    • Robotic-assisted videothoracoscopic surgery may enhance radical resection accuracy for thymomas.
    • This study reports an 8-year experience with robotic thymectomy for thymomas at a single referral center.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To demonstrate the feasibility and safety of robotic-assisted thymectomy for thymomas.
    • To report outcomes including morbidity, mortality, and survival rates over an 8-year period.

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective analysis of consecutive patients undergoing robotic thymectomy between April 2004 and April 2012.
    • Evaluation of procedure time, complications, hospital stay, recurrence-free survival, progression-free survival, and overall survival.

    Main Results:

    • 37 patients underwent robotic thymectomy for thymoma, with various histological subtypes and Masaoka-Koga stages (I-IVa).
    • Mean procedure time was 149 minutes; no surgical mortality or peri-operative complications were reported.
    • 100% overall survival and 2.7% tumor recurrence were observed; 5.4% experienced myasthenic crisis postoperatively.

    Conclusions:

    • Robotic thymectomies are safe and effective for early-stage thymomas.
    • The robotic approach is feasible for selected cases of advanced thymomas.
