Area of Science:

  • Psychiatry
  • Clinical Psychology
  • Public Health

Background:

  • Depression rates are increasing globally, necessitating accessible treatment options.
  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a recommended treatment, but face-to-face access is limited by waiting lists and patient reluctance.
  • Community-based, self-referral CBT interventions may bridge the treatment gap.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the efficacy and cost-effectiveness of the guided CBT self-help course, "Living Life to the Full" (LLTTF), delivered by Action on Depression (AOD).
  • To assess the impact of LLTTF on depression, anxiety, and social functioning.

Main Methods:

  • A randomized controlled trial (RCT) involving community recruitment via newspaper adverts and the AOD website.
  • Participants received either immediate or delayed access to the eight-session LLTTF course.
  • Primary outcome measured at 6 months using the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) depression scale; secondary measures included anxiety and social functioning. An economic analysis was also conducted.

Main Results:

  • The study is designed to test the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of the LLTTF intervention.
  • Results will indicate if LLTTF impacts depression, anxiety, and social functioning at 6 months.

Conclusions:

  • The LLTTF community-based classes may offer a cost-effective solution for improving access to psychological therapy.
  • This intervention could benefit individuals seeking care within the health service and those seeking help independently, thereby widening access to mental health support.
