Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the impact of a neck coordination training program (CTP) and an endurance training program (ETP) on neck muscular strength and endurance in helicopter aircrew.
  • To compare the effectiveness of CTP and ETP against a non-treatment control group (CON).

Main Methods:

  • Canadian Forces helicopter aircrew were randomized into CTP (N=10), ETP (N=11), or CON (N=8) groups.
  • Baseline and post-intervention assessments measured maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) strength and endurance capacity at 70% MVC for neck flexion, extension, and lateral flexion.
  • ETP involved dynamic contractions using resistance tubing; CTP focused on deep and superficial cervical muscle strengthening.

  • The ETP group demonstrated a statistically significant increase in maximal force (14.4%) compared to the CON group.
