Background:

The paired-stimulus (PS) preference assessment is established for determining animal preferences.
Limited research exists on whether preferred stimuli from PS assessments function as effective reinforcers in dogs.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate the paired-stimulus preference assessment's predictive validity for reinforcer effectiveness in dogs.
To determine if food preferences identified via PS assessment translate to behavioral reinforcement.

Main Methods:

Eight dogs participated in the study.
A paired-stimulus preference assessment was conducted, followed by concurrent and progressive ratio schedules.
Food items were used as stimuli to evaluate reinforcer efficacy.

Main Results:

The paired-stimulus preference assessment successfully predicted reinforcer efficacy for all eight dogs.
A strong correlation was found between preference assessment outcomes and behavioral reinforcement.

Conclusions:

The paired-stimulus preference assessment is a valid predictor of reinforcer effectiveness in dogs.
This method offers a valuable tool for applied animal behavior and canine research.
