This study tested a new cognitive training program for schizophrenia in Brazil. The program, using simple resources, improved inhibitory control and set-shifting in patients.
Area of Science:
- Neuroscience
- Psychiatry
- Cognitive Psychology
Background:
- Cognitive deficits significantly impair schizophrenia patients' quality of life.
- Existing cognitive training programs are primarily developed in high-income countries, limiting accessibility in developing nations.
- Cultural and economic factors pose challenges for adopting Western treatment models in diverse settings.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the efficacy and feasibility of a novel cognitive training program for schizophrenia tailored to a developing country context.
- To assess if a low-resource intervention can improve cognitive functions in stable Brazilian schizophrenia patients.
- To evaluate the program's potential for wider adoption in resource-limited settings.
Main Methods:
- A pilot, double-blind, randomized controlled trial was conducted.
- The intervention involved a 5-month group-based attention and memory training program using simple, accessible materials.
- Seventeen stable Brazilian patients with schizophrenia participated, with weekly sessions.
Main Results:
- The cognitive training group demonstrated significant improvements in inhibitory control and set-shifting.
- Both groups showed enhancements in processing speed, selective attention, executive function, and long-term visual memory.
- The control group exhibited improvements in long-term verbal memory and concentration.
Conclusions:
- Cognitive training for schizophrenia can be effectively implemented using minimal resources and infrastructure, making it suitable for developing countries.
- This approach shows promise for improving cognitive functions in schizophrenia patients within resource-constrained environments.
- The findings support the development and adaptation of culturally relevant cognitive interventions for schizophrenia globally.
