Summary

This case study details a rare maxillary canine transposition to an incisor position in an 8-year-old girl. Orthodontic treatment successfully repositioned the transposed canine into the correct incisor site.

Area of Science:

  • Dentistry
  • Orthodontics
  • Oral Surgery

Background:

  • Dental transposition, the positional interchange of adjacent teeth, often co-occurs with other dental anomalies.
  • Maxillary canine transposition is frequently associated with impacted incisors, malformations, and dilacerations.
  • Pathologic local processes can also contribute to the development of canine transposition.

Observation:

  • A rare case of maxillary canine-to-maxillary incisor transposition was observed in an 8-year-old girl.
  • The patient presented with a non-erupted permanent maxillary left central incisor, revealed as impacted and dilacerated via radiography.
  • The severely dilacerated central incisor was extracted, and the canine subsequently transposed into the extraction site over three years.

Findings:

  • Successful orthodontic traction and tooth reshaping were employed to manage the transposed canine.
  • The transposed canine was ultimately positioned correctly into the maxillary incisor site.
  • Implications:

    • This case highlights the importance of early diagnosis and intervention for dental transpositions.
    • Effective orthodontic management can achieve favorable outcomes even in complex cases of tooth transposition.
    • Understanding the etiology and management of canine transpositions is crucial for pediatric dental care.
