Background:

  • Cutaneous protothecosis is a rare infection caused by achlorophyllic algae of the genus Prototheca.
  • Lesions typically appear on exposed areas, often associated with trauma, particularly in immunocompromised individuals.

Observation:

  • The clinical presentation is often non-specific, mimicking bacterial, fungal, or herpetic infections, or eczema.
  • Commonly observed are vesicobullous and ulcerative lesions with pustules and scabs.

Findings:

  • Diagnosis is confirmed by identifying the Prototheca species through histopathology, culture, and carbohydrate assimilation tests.
  • Characteristic findings include morula-like spherules, indicative of Prototheca.

Implications:
