Summary

Melasma significantly increases the risk of developing post-acne pigmentation. Patients with melasma are nearly six times more likely to experience post-acne hyperpigmentation compared to those without it.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the likelihood of melasma patients developing post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation compared to acne patients without melasma.

Main Methods:

  • A comparative study of 400 participants: 200 with melasma and acne, 200 with acne only.
  • Dermatological assessment of melasma, acne, and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation; Wood's lamp for pigmentation depth.
  • Multivariate logistic regression analyzed the association between melasma and post-acne pigmentation.

Main Results:

  • 66.8% of melasma patients developed post-acne pigmentation versus 24.1% in the non-melasma group (P < 0.001).
  • Melasma patients were nearly six times more likely to have post-acne pigmentation.
  • The association remained significant after controlling for confounders like melanin score, sun exposure, and acne severity.

Conclusions:

  • Melasma is an independent risk factor for developing post-acne pigmentation.
  • This study highlights a significant link between melasma and increased susceptibility to post-acne hyperpigmentation.
