Direct Motor Pathways01:11

Direct Motor Pathways

4.7K
The direct motor pathways, also known as the pyramidal tracts, are a group of neural pathways that originate in the brain and descend through the spinal cord. They control the voluntary movement of the body. There are two major direct motor pathways: the corticospinal and the corticobulbar tracts.
The corticospinal tract is responsible for the voluntary movement of the limbs and trunk. It originates in the cerebral cortex of the brain and descends through the cerebrum's internal capsule and...

Short-distance Transport of Resources02:12

Short-distance Transport of Resources

14.5K
Short-distance transport refers to transport that occurs over a distance of just 2-3 cells, crossing the plasma membrane in the process. Small uncharged molecules, such as oxygen, carbon dioxide, and water, can diffuse across the plasma membrane on their own. In contrast, ions and larger molecules require the assistance of transport proteins due to their charge or size. Transport across membranes also occurs within individual cells, playing a variety of essential roles for the plant as a whole.

Area of Science:

  • Dental Public Health
  • Health Policy Analysis
  • Qualitative Research Methods

Background:

  • The Netherlands introduced a direct access policy for dental professionals in 2006.
  • This policy aimed to alter the landscape of dental care delivery and professional roles.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To qualitatively explore the perceptions of various stakeholders regarding the direct access policy.
  • To understand the impact of the policy on dental practice and professional relationships in the Netherlands.

Main Methods:

  • Semi-structured interviews and focus groups were conducted with policymakers and clinicians.
  • Thematic analysis of transcribed data was performed using NVivo software.

Main Results:

  • Four key themes emerged: 'The narrative of implementation', 'Working models of direct access', 'Relationship between old- and new-style hygienists', and 'Public attitudes'.
  • Positive working relationships were observed within integrated dental practices.
  • Attitudes towards independent practice among dental professionals were varied.

Conclusions:

  • Collaborative working models in Dutch dental practices show promise.
  • Challenges persist in the relationships between professional bodies seven years after the direct access policy implementation.
  • Mixed public and professional attitudes towards independent dental practice were identified.
