Potential for danger: case series of traumatic dental injuries associated with e-bike or e-scooter use

Abstract:
This paper presents three adult cases referred to a Scottish Dental Hospital and Research School for management of traumatic dental injuries (TDIs), associated with either electric bike (e-bike) or electric scooter (e-scooter) use. E-bikes and e-scooters are widely available for purchase within the UK. This article discusses the factors relevant to e-bikes and scooters which may affect resulting injuries. These include the mechanism of trauma, alcohol intake and helmet-use. Patients sustaining such injuries are likely to present to the dental team in primary care in the first instance, often with combination injuries. In the cases presented, injuries included concussions, enamel-dentine fractures, luxations, alveolar bone fractures and avulsions. Dental practitioners should be aware of the associated challenges in managing such cases, such as delayed presentation, associated injury pattern and potential need for multi-disciplinary dental management. The cases presented discuss the TDIs, initial treatment and challenges encountered.
