Tibial osteochondroma inducing popliteal artery compression

Popliteal fossa compression, often from muscle issues, can cause leg pain in athletes. This case shows a rare bony tumor causing similar symptoms, relieved by surgery.

Background:
- Popliteal fossa neurovascular compression is rare, typically caused by musculotendinous abnormalities (popliteal entrapment syndrome).
- Symptoms include exercise-induced leg pain and paresthesias, mimicking other conditions.
- Bony abnormalities are infrequent causes but can present similarly.
Observation:
- A young athlete presented with symptoms suggestive of popliteal entrapment syndrome.
- Imaging revealed an osteochondroma of the tibial metaphysis.
- The osteochondroma was identified as the cause of popliteal artery compression.
Findings:
- Surgical resection of the tibial osteochondroma was performed.
- Post-operatively, the patient's symptoms of pain and paresthesias were completely resolved.
- This confirmed the osteochondroma as the source of popliteal artery compression.
Implications:
- Highlights the importance of considering bony abnormalities in popliteal fossa compression, even when rare.
- Demonstrates that osteochondromas can cause neurovascular compromise in the popliteal fossa.
