Immunotherapy is a treatment that boosts or manipulates the immune system to fight diseases, including cancer. For instance, by stimulating an immune response through vaccinations against viruses that cause cancers, like hepatitis B virus and human papillomavirus, these diseases can be prevented. Nonetheless, some cancer cells can avoid the immune system due to their rapid mutation and division. The immune response to many cancers involves three phases: elimination, equilibrium, and escape.

Summary

This study found no randomized controlled trials for immunotherapy in idiopathic lumbosacral plexopathy (ILSP). Therefore, there is currently no evidence to support immunotherapy treatment for this rare nerve condition.

Background:

  • Idiopathic lumbosacral plexopathy (ILSP) is a rare condition characterized by severe, asymmetrical leg pain and weakness.

  • ILSP typically has a self-limiting course with slow, often incomplete recovery.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the effectiveness of any form of immunotherapy for treating idiopathic lumbosacral plexopathy (ILSP).

Main Methods:

  • A systematic search of multiple databases (Cochrane, MEDLINE, EMBASE, etc.) was conducted up to October 2013.
  • Inclusion criteria focused on randomized controlled trials (RCTs) or quasi-RCTs of immunotherapy initiated within six weeks of ILSP onset.
  • Studies excluded participants with diabetes or other identifiable causes of lumbosacral plexopathy.

Main Results:

  • The comprehensive search identified zero randomized controlled trials (RCTs) investigating immunotherapy for ILSP.
  • No eligible studies met the predefined inclusion criteria for the systematic review.

Conclusions:

  • Currently, there is a lack of evidence from randomized trials to guide immunotherapy recommendations for ILSP.
  • Further research, particularly well-designed RCTs, is needed to establish effective treatments for this condition.
