Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate a pilot multidisciplinary, simulation-based robotic surgery basic skills training curriculum (BSTC) for surgical novices.
  • To assess the effectiveness of different training strategies, including competency-based versus time-based training.

Main Methods:

  • A 4-week BSTC program was implemented for Surgery and Obstetrics & Gynecology (ObGyn) trainees at the University of Toronto.
  • Training incorporated didactic lectures, online modules, da Vinci robot (dVR) hands-on sessions, and the da Vinci Skills Simulator (dVSS).
  • Pre- and post-course skill assessments (ring transfer, needle passing) were conducted on the dVR, with 5-month retention testing.

Main Results:

  • Significant improvements in task completion time and error reduction were observed for both ring transfer and needle passing tasks post-training (p < 0.01).
  • No significant performance differences were found between surgical specialties.
  • Competency-based training on the dVSS was associated with significantly better post-course performance.

Conclusions:

  • The pilot simulation-based robotic surgery BSTC effectively improved basic robotic skills in novice trainees across specialties.
  • Competency-based training demonstrated superior acquisition of fundamental robotic surgical skills compared to time-based training.
