Summary

Oral myiasis, a fly larvae infestation, can cause severe tissue damage. This case report details successful treatment of oral myiasis in a patient with cerebral palsy using manual removal and ivermectin.

Background:

Myiasis is tissue invasion by Diptera fly larvae, common in tropical/subtropical skin, affecting animals and humans.
Risk factors include poor hygiene, alcoholism, senility, and neurological conditions like cerebral palsy.
Larvae cause tissue destruction by consuming host tissues, fluids, or ingested food.

Observation:

A case of oral myiasis is reported in a 22-year-old male with cerebral palsy and severe mental retardation.
The patient presented with symptoms indicative of tissue infestation within the oral cavity.
Facilitating factors included mouth breathing, severe mental retardation, and cerebral palsy.

Findings:

Successful treatment involved manual removal of larvae.
Topical application of turpentine oil was used as an adjunct therapy.
Oral systemic ivermectin was administered for complete eradication.

Implications:

This case highlights the successful management of oral myiasis in a vulnerable patient population.
It underscores the importance of recognizing and treating myiasis, even in atypical presentations.
The combined therapeutic approach offers a viable strategy for similar cases, preventing complications.
