Background:

  • Tractor overturns are the leading cause of fatalities in U.S. agriculture.
  • Rollover protection structures (ROPS) are highly effective in preventing deaths and injuries during tractor overturns.
  • A significant percentage of tractors, nearly 49% nationally, lack essential ROPS.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare ROPS protection and readiness for retrofitting among different farm segments in Vermont and Pennsylvania.
  • To identify specific farmer demographics and farm characteristics associated with ROPS prevalence.
  • To understand farmers' stage of change regarding ROPS installation for targeted interventions.

Main Methods:

  • A telephone survey was conducted to gather data on ROPS prevalence, farm demographics, and farmer attitudes towards ROPS installation.
  • Data were collected on commodity type, farm size, and farmer's stage of change.
  • Statistical analysis was performed to identify trends and target audiences.

  • Approximately 53% of the studied tractors (162,072 total) across Pennsylvania and Vermont lack ROPS (85,927 tractors).

Conclusions:

  • Most farmers in Pennsylvania and Vermont are not actively considering ROPS retrofitting in the near future.
  • Smaller cash crop farms in Pennsylvania and vegetable/cash crop farms in Vermont represent key target groups for intervention.
  • While ROPS adoption is increasing, an estimated 90,000 tractors remain unprotected, necessitating continued social marketing and financial incentive programs.
