Background:

Revalidation is a UK General Medical Council policy reform aimed at ensuring doctors remain up-to-date and fit to practice.
A core objective of revalidation is to benefit patients and enhance doctor-patient relationships.

Purpose of the Study:

To analyze policy makers' conceptualizations of revalidation.
To examine the extent to which patient-centeredness is represented in the policy development discourse.

Main Methods:

Qualitative analysis of 29 drawings created by 31 policy makers involved in revalidation development.
Interviews conducted in 2010-2011 provided context for the drawings.

Main Results:

Drawings predominantly featured abstract systems and processes, with limited representation of interpersonal interactions.
Only 3 out of 29 drawings depicted individual patients and doctors, indicating a depersonalization of the policy.
