Summary

Extensive multifocal postpartum breast infarction is rare and can affect postpartum patients. This condition may have long-term effects and should be considered in patient history and mammogram evaluations.

Area of Science:

  • Reproductive Medicine
  • Pathology
  • Radiology

Background:

  • Breast infarction is an uncommon condition affecting breast tissue, often seen in gravid or lactating individuals.
  • Etiologies for breast infarction remain poorly understood, with limited existing theories.
  • It can occur in both benign breast lesions and healthy breast tissue.

Observation:

  • A rare case of a 27-year-old female patient presented with extensive, multifocal, and bilateral mammary infarction.
  • A comprehensive literature review confirmed the extreme rarity of such widespread involvement.
  • No prior documented cases exhibited such a large, multifocal area of infarction without a clear precipitating cause.

Findings:

  • The case highlights extensive multifocal postpartum breast infarction as a distinct clinical entity.
  • This condition can manifest bilaterally and extensively in postpartum patients.
  • The etiology in this case remained unexplained, underscoring a gap in current understanding.

Implications:

  • Extensive multifocal postpartum breast infarction is a rare but significant condition with potential long-term sequelae.
  • Clinicians should consider this diagnosis in the history of postpartum patients presenting with breast issues.
  • Mammographic findings of extensive calcifications years after childbirth may warrant consideration of prior infarction.
