Area of Science:

  • Oculoplastic surgery
  • Facial aesthetic surgery

Background:

  • The epicanthal fold is a common feature, particularly in Asian individuals.
  • Existing surgical techniques for epicanthoplasty often face challenges with scarring and achieving natural-looking results.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To introduce and evaluate a novel surgical technique for medial epicanthoplasty.
  • To assess the efficacy and aesthetic outcomes of the "Inside-Out" technique for treating epicanthal folds.

Main Methods:

  • A prospective study involving 1132 patients undergoing medial epicanthoplasty between January 2005 and December 2011.
  • Utilized the "Inside-Out" technique, involving outward mobilization of the skin flap within the medial epicanthal fold.
  • Measured interepicanthal distance preoperatively and at 2 months postoperatively.

Main Results:

  • The "Inside-Out" technique demonstrated satisfactory aesthetic outcomes in the majority of patients.
  • A small percentage of patients (nine) reported visible scarring, which resolved spontaneously within six months.
  • The procedure was characterized by its ease and simplicity.

Conclusions:

  • The "Inside-Out" technique is a safe and effective method for medial epicanthoplasty.
  • This technique offers good aesthetic results and is well-tolerated by patients.
  • It presents a valuable alternative for correcting epicanthal folds with improved cosmetic outcomes.
