Summary

Touch can create an illusory visual flash, similar to sound-induced illusions. Pre-stimulus alpha brainwave activity influences whether this touch-induced visual illusion is perceived.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate if tactile stimuli can modulate the visual evoked potential (VEP).
  • To examine pre-stimulus electroencephalogram (EEG) activity related to tactile-induced visual illusions.
  • To compare neural mechanisms underlying sound- and touch-induced visual illusions.

Main Methods:

  • Recorded electroencephalogram (EEG) over occipital and parieto-occipital areas in 12 participants.
  • Compared EEG responses to bimodal (touch + visual) stimuli with unimodal (touch or visual) stimuli.
  • Analyzed EEG activity differentiating between trials where the illusion was perceived and those where it was absent.

Main Results:

  • Significant positive deflections in VEPs were observed around 110 ms and 200 ms post-stimulus.
